Sitio de Calahonda is the largest property development in the municipality of Mijas situated between Marbella and Fuengirola. The two features which prove most attractive when buying a property here are the area's rural atmosphere and coastal lifestyle. Although it is a developed area the designer was anxious - and managed to be successful - in preserving rural areas with over 60 hectares of green zones that have been stocked with pine trees, using large plots of land and limiting the number of apartment buildings. The urbanisation extends gently from the coast up to 300 metres above sea level, which offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and mountains, along the coastline to Gibraltar and Africa where the Atlas Mountains are often visible on a clear day. This is a great area to buy a property as it offers an atmosphere of rest and relaxation with the buzz of city life just a stone's throw away. The historic city of Granada and the Sierra Nevada, which is a well known winter sports resort and a favourite skiing destination, are only two hours away by car.

The vast majority of Calahonda's 600,000 square metres is devoted to villas, townhouses and its four golf courses, but selected areas have been dedicated to providing residents with every amenity. There are three commercial centres which house most of the 45 restaurants, cafeterias and bars as well as seven banks, several supermarkets and a wide variety of other businesses which include a hardware shop, furniture outlets, a garden centre, travel agencies, car hire, garage repair and property management.

There are ten golf courses within a 10 kilometre radius of Calahonda. It has is own harbour - Puerto Cabopino - where you can practice just about any kind of nautical sport including sailing, windsurfing, paragliding and kite surfing or take a boat trips and go dolphin watching, deep sea fishing or skin diving. Puerto de Cabopino has 170 berths for small and medium size vessels and is surrounded by some excellent bars and restaurants. Tennis courts and a fitness centre are also available to residents. From Puerto Cabopino the fine sandy beaches stretch to Calahonda and on to Marbella in the west. You can walk along here passing the Artola dunes which is a protected national park and has a restored Moorish lookout tower

Health care is provided by a chemist and three medical centres which offer a 24 hour service. The Hospital Costa del Sol which is well known as a state-of-the-art medical facility is just minutes from Calahonda. Because there are so many British residents here most people speak English.

If you are buying a property to live in and moving your family to Calahonda there is a nursery school here and private primary and secondary schools are located nearby. The English International School (EIC), which is well known on the coast, is just a ten minute drive from the urbanisation. If you prefer high quality Spanish schooling for your children then girls can enrol in Las Chapas and boys in Ecos, which are private Catholic schools run by the Grupo Atendis and are located just off the N-340 on the way to Marbella. State-funded schooling is available in La Cala de Mijas, where the schools provide a free bus service to students traveling from Calahonda.

Property in Calahonda has excellent resale potential as since its inception in 1963 the area has won several prestigious awards including best Spanish urbanisation, resident tourism and best developer. Malaga International Airport is just a 20 minute drive way, and the stylish resort of Marbella and luxurious yachting marina and urbanization of Puerto Banus are just a fifteen and twenty five minute drive away respectively.
