Fuengirola is an excellent area in which to buy a property as it has good transport communication links and is just twenty minutes from Malaga airport, while the local train station provides quick and easy access to the popular nearby resorts of Torreblanca, Arroyo de la Miel and Torremolinos.

Fuengirola has five miles of sandy beaches, with a recent landscaping initiative by the local municipality resulting in a very attractive wide promenade edged with and plenty of palm trees which are interspersed with colourful flower beds and seating areas. The Paseo Marítimo Rey de España, is one of the longest esplanades in Spain. It is almost seven kilometres long passing by beaches with chiringuitos and restaurants along the way. The beautiful marina is filled with bars and good restaurants with luxurious yachts sharing space with the fishermen's boats. The marina can hold 226 boats and a street market is held here every Sunday. The beaches of Boliches, Gaviotas and Torreblanca all hold a prestigious European Blue Flag award.

Fuengirola is one of the most important tourist towns on the eastern Costa de Sol with a municipal area extending almost eleven square kilometres along the coast between Benalmádena and Mijas. The northeast boundary is formed by the Arroyo del Jardín stream and to the south east is the mouth of the Fuengirola River. To the extreme north the terrain is very mountainous with a few housing developments scattered around. If you want to buy a property away from the bustling town centre this is the area of you.

If you want to buy a property in a cosmopolitan area of Spain, then Fuengirola is ideal for you as many Spanish nationals own summer apartments here. There are also a number of British and other nationalities living here which has resulted in an impressive variety of entertainment and restaurants, ranging from the traditional tapas bars to places specializing in seafood or sardines cooked on the spit: or if you are missing UK food you can go for the standard bangers, chips and beans with Guinness on tap.

Fuengirola is a compact seaside town with an excellent selection of supermarkets and local shops with one of the busiest markets on the Costa del Sol on a Tuesday morning. There is also a Saturday boot sale here where you will find an intriguing selection of items on sale.

If you are buying a property here to move to permanently or as an investment which you will rent out, Fuengirola offers excellent potential as there is no shortage of things to do with family fun activities at the aqua park, zoo and a wide variety of water sports to a leisurely sight seeing tour in a horse-drawn carriage. Los Boliches which is Fuengirola's immediate neighbour still reflects a bygone era with its traditional whitewashed houses which were once occupied by local fishermen, narrow cobbled streets and neighbourhood.

Do not be put off buying property here by being fooled into thinking that Fuengirola is just a seaside resort. The origin of the name Fuengirola is probably Spanish rather than Roman or Moorish deriving from a type of ship that used to dock here. The Phoenicians were the first settlers here on the hill outside the town centre that the Romans later built a castle on. It became an important part of the defensive line against pirate attacks from the coast and the ruins of the castle can be clearly seen on the hill from the main coast road into the town from Marbella. Some of the most important archaeological sites in the municipality are the Roman hot baths at Torreblanca, the remains of various Roman roads and Cañada Real and the marble pieces found in the Mijas quarries which were used to build a monument in the form of a temple in the Plaza de Castilla in Los Boliches

Buying a property in Fuengirola offers a taste of the real Spain with annual fiestas here including the romantic feast of the patron saint of the sea, Virgin del Carmen, which takes place in July when local fisherman carry an effigy surrounded by candles out to sea. During the month of August there are a number of festivals and cultural activities with the Festival Ciudad de Fuengirola in the castle. The local feria takes place for a week in October when the town comes to life with flamenco and lots of dry sherry and goes on from dawn to dusk.
