If you are thinking of buying a property in Mijas this is a beautiful and traditional part of mainland Spain which is situated at the foothills of the Cordón Montañoso del Litoral with views along the Costa del Sol. The area covers almost 140 square kilometres stretching from the mountains down to the sea and surrounding the municipality of Fuengirola. The urban areas here are Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas and La Cala de Mijas. In the first neighbourhood is the old part of the town with its Town Hall, historic buildings and white Andalucian houses. Las Lagunas is a more commercial area where most of the services and housing developments are situated. The Fuengirola River flows through the centre of the municipality passing through large agricultural areas containing golf courses and luxury housing developments.

Mijas Costa is a coastal stretch which joins (from East to West) El Chaparral, La Cala, El Combo and Calahonda, taking in the two major urbanisations of Riviera del Sol and Sitio de Calahonda. It is just a twenty minute drive from tiny mountain village of Mijas which is still steeped in the old Andalucian traditions and customs with donkey-taxis lining the central plaza. The historic village has two Mudejar churches and the sanctuary of the patron saint of Mijas dating back to the year 850. During the month of January, Mijas Pueblo holds the festival of San Anton which is an open air party at the holy hermitage which is accessed in carriages and carts which are piled high with flowers and food.

If you are buying a property in Mijas Costa then there are all types to choose from ranging from small studio apartments for holiday lets to spectacular villas with views of the sea and mountain from their private swimming pool. The beach here offers numerous water sports including jet skiing, waterskiing, sailing, windsurfing and paragliding.

Sitio de Calahonda and Riviera del Sol are large villages in their own right and have all modern amenities including banks, shops, supermarkets, golf courses, sports centres, bars and restaurants. There are many British and other foreign residents who live here permanently. During the summer months the area is also very popular with holidaymakers, and a number of golfers come here out of season. Because there are a large number of English speaking residents here there are some excellent international schools and staff at the medical centres can speak English.

La Cala de Mijas is the central point of Mijas Costa and still retains something of its original Andalucian 'village by the sea' atmosphere. Originally it was just a tiny fishing village, but its population has now increased to over 10,000 people. This growth has given rise to schools, a health centre, public library, post office, shops and cultural centre as well as some excellent bars and restaurants. There is a popular street market here every Wednesday and Saturday morning selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to local crafts, clothes, ceramics and pottery to flowers and plants.

If you do buy a property here then there is always plenty to see and do locally. La Cala celebrates its own festivals and has an annual fair which starts on 25th July, when the village is decorated for a week of festivities and you can sample the traditional sherry, wines and tapas, listen to local music and enjoy the dancing.

During July and August at night you can visit the promenade at La Cala to hear classical music and watch Flamenco dancing. This is all presented with the 16th Century watchtower of Torre Vieja acting as its backdrop with the moon reflecting on the sea and the village celebrates a season of Noches de Luna y Playa (Nights of Moon and Beach).

For the golfer's among you the municipality of Mijas would be paradise with some of the best courses to chose from in the area and the excellent all-year round climate. If you buy a property in Mijas Village, the Las Lagunas area or at any of the points along Mijas Costa you can rest assured that you are never more than a few minutes away from a golf course.

Whether you are buying a property in Mijas Costa to move to permanently, use as a holiday home yourself or to rent out, this popular area offers plenty to both tourists and people working on the Costa del Sol which means that buying a property here offers excellent investment potential: both in the long and short term.
