It is the first port of call on entering the Mediterranean and its situation, infrastructure and fabulous climate all year round makes it a fabulous place to be. It is just thirty minutes from the stylish resorts of Marbella and Puerto Banus on the Costa del Sol and offers excellent motorway links to Malaga, Jerez, Cadiz and Seville. Gibraltar Airport is just 15 minutes away or you can fly into Malaga which is then just a 45 minute drive along a fast stretch of motorway. So if you are buying a property to use either as a holiday home for all the family or just for short breaks to get away from it all for a while then Sotogrande is ideal.

This is a wonderful area to purchase property as its geographic location close to the Straits of Gibraltar and the Atlantic Ocean offers a wide choice of beach activities with superb water sports (the international windsurfing championships are held at Tarifa); and the Mediterranean inlets and coves of nearby Estepona have the Playa de Cristo which is great for small children because of its shallow and safe waters. The beaches here are over 23km long and have won prestigious Blue Flag Awards. Estepona also has a port and harbour where you can rent a boat with or without a skipper or can go on a dolphin spotting voyage and deep sea fishing excursions. There is also an old town which is full of narrow cobbled streets bursting with bars and restaurants and the port has its own market on a Sunday.

If you are thinking of buying property in Sotogrande and looking around the area it is hard to imagine how different it looked in 1964 when the American Joseph McMicking had the foresight to start development work in the area. Back in the 1970's there was practically no one living there and it was just a large area with a few country homes scattered around. The name Sotogrande originates from the name of one of the five farms which were purchased to commence the development. Luckily McMicking saw its enormous potential and enhanced this further by clever landscaping, the planting of avenues of palm trees and by hiding the infrastructure underground. It now offers all the peace and tranquility of a rural area with easy access to the towns, cities and buzz of the Costa del Sol.

Sotogrande is known as a luxurious location that is still growing and is fast becoming the place to be. It has a very attractive marina where fine restaurants and bars line the water's edge. It is the epitome of good taste and there will never be high-rise developments here. If you thinking of buying a property here then it is an ideal base for sailing and golf holidays: being just minutes away from Valderrama and several other courses. Because it offers 300 days of sunshine a year sports remain active in Sotogrande all year round.

The marina was built in 1987 and has all the modern facilities you would expect at a resort of this calibre. Within a thirty minute drive of Sotogrande are the smaller, luxury ports of Puerto de la Duquesa and Estepona. The number of berths in Sotogrande will double when the second phase of the development is completed shortly. All the moorings have the usual facilities and there are ample dry-dock facilities and provisions for activities such as jet-skiing.

Sotogrande area is an excellent place to purchase property as it is currently undergoing constant improvement and expansion with new properties and golf courses springing up all the time. It is believed that this area will become one of the Costa del Sol's most important leisure areas over the next few years so now is certainly the time to buy property here.

If you are a nature lover, then Sotogrande is the ideal place for you to buy a property with the spectacular Guadiaro Estuary which is a protected natural area of 27 hectares of marshland. It is of particular interest to birdwatchers, but many residents often enjoy a stroll along its wooden walkways.

Whether you are buying a property in Sotogrande to rent, use as holiday home or live in permanently there is something for everyone. It is an area which offers excellent investment potential with its range of sports including sailing, golf, tennis or polo and it is just a wonderful place to be to relax and enjoy the fabulous surroundings.
